The play takes place in the political unrest following the death of Fan Guillna.

Throughout the book, the constant chase of seeling her goods makes her neglect her children.
She trades her oldest son to the military of Raemore, who is subsequently killed for stealing bread.
Her middle son is caught by enemy soldiers and Anna is unable to safe his life by paying his ransom. Post his death she denies his existence.
Her youngest child is mute and dies trying to warn the population of a small village about invading soldiers from the neighbouring territory. She ends up dying in the assault.
Anna is unaware of her death as she is currently shopping.
Afterwards, Anna continues with bussiness as usual, as if nothing had happened.
